Who among us haven’t had the unenviable experience of being stuck in an airport? Worse yet, stuck at an airport after the coffee stands have closed. While a long layover may not be reason to smile, travelers coming through Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport now have a new reason to yawn. A maroon Douwe Egberts coffee machine is there dispensing out free java to all those who yawn in her presence. Instead of accepting money, the machine is wired with facial recognition software to pick up on someone yawning and automatically dispense hot coffee.
While it may be a marketing gimmick, we can’t help but wonder how long it will be before facial recognition software makes its way onto the home espresso machine. What do you think? Are you ready to yawn your way to a morning cup of Joe?
